Your piece should feature a number—or several!

Think creatively:

  • Use a quote about numbers
  • Highlight your favorite number (birthday, anniversary, address, math equation)
  • Explore the idea of “2b or not 2b” in your design

Whether your work is calculated or spontaneous, we’re excited to see your designs of numerical creativity. Let your imagination add up to something unforgettable!

Choose a word, and letter it in five different ways on one piece of paper. You can use a different tool and lettering style for each version of the word.

To add to the variety, think about the various elements of design. Consider space, size, texture, line, shape, and colour.

Create your entire design on a single sheet of paper, or if you prefer, work on each design of the word separately and then combine them digitally or collage all five onto one piece of paper.

Make-up a word and create a definition for it. It should sound like a real word, but not be a real word. Another alternative is to look up words that should exist, but don’t. Like CARPERPETUATION: The act, when vacuuming, of running over a piece of string at least a dozen times, reaching over, picking it up, then putting it back down to give the vacuum one more chance. You could use the “Random Word Generator” to make up a word for you: https://randomwordgenerator.com/fake-word.php But the definition is up to you! So, let’s all SHURMAL an UNGULAR word and GRAFFLE FLURGY art. DEFINITION: So, let’s all make-up a strange word and create beautiful art.

Find a favourite song. Could be one you sing to your children or your grandchildren. A song you love to dance, or a background for meditation. A song you sing around the campfire or in the shower. The first song played at your wedding. Perhaps a favourite song from your childhood or teenage years. Use the title or some of the lyrics and show us how you get your groove on!

There are some great one-liner quotes from the movies. “There’s no place like home” to search online for what looks like a great number of choices. Now, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” which movie you choose, so “Go ahead, make my day” by submitting something to our Galleria. “Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy night” as you gather your calligraphy supplies to work on this theme. “Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.” If you don’t get it done in one sitting, that’s okay, “After all, tomorrow is another day.”  The deadline for submissions is November 25 in anticipation of the February Journal, and if we don’t have it by then, well “Houston, we have a problem” and perhaps “What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.” So go ahead and pick a movie… “You’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?’”
