Engrosser's Script - A Three-Part Workshop Series 

Engrosser's Script is admired for its elegant shades, delicate hairlines, and beautifully refined letterforms. While it may look intimidating at first, it becomes much more approachable when you understand the principles behind it and know what to look for as you practice. 
 
In this three-part workshop series, we'll work through the foundations of Engrosser's Script step by step. Starting with the tools, basic strokes, and lowercase letters, we'll gradually build toward connected words, spacing, and capitals. There will be lots of guided practice throughout the course, giving you plenty of opportunities to develop confidence and consistency. 
 
One of the biggest challenges in learning Engrosser's Script is knowing how to assess your own work. That's why this workshop focuses not only on training your hand, but also on training your eye. You'll learn what to look for when reviewing your calligraphy, how to spot inconsistencies in your strokes and spacing, and how to make meaningful adjustments. By training both the hand and the eye, you'll gain the skills needed to continue improving long after the workshop ends. 
 
This workshop is suitable for calligraphers who are new to Engrosser's Script as well as those looking to strengthen their fundamentals and improve consistency in their calligraphy.

Non-members – please consider joining BVCG. The membership cost is $45 and includes three Journals per membership year, 3 two-hour online enrichment sessions over the winter and many in-person sessions with access to our BVCG calligraphy library.

Important Notes: 

Fees are nonrefundable unless you are cancelling for a medical reason OR your spot is filled from a wait list. BVCG reserves the right to cancel any workshop if there are not sufficient registrations, in which case you will receive a refund of workshop fees.  

When paying by credit card, our software provider Yapla covers the service charge of 3.9%, so that the BVCG receives the full workshop fee. About the Instructor: 

Maxie Peña is a Filipina calligrapher who specializes in Engrosser's Script. She received her IAMPETH Certificate of Proficiency in 2023 and Certificate of Excellence in 2024. 
 
Maxie's love for the pointed pen began in 2016 during an in-person workshop in Manila. The moment she put a pointed nib to paper, she knew she had found her favourite. While she enjoys working with many calligraphic tools and styles, she is especially drawn to the cursive form and the natural contrast between the swells and hairlines that the pointed nib can create. 
 
Known for her analytical approach to calligraphy, Maxie enjoys deconstructing letterforms and helping students understand the details that make a script harmonious. She has been teaching workshops since 2019 and her goal is to share the same joy and fascination that sparked her lifelong love of calligraphy.
