Alice Young - "Strong Lines" working with the Pilot Parallel Pen (This class is full - sorry)
The fluid, expressive nature of calligraphy lends itself to both delicacy and strength, but the focus of this workshop is how to achieve strength and power in our calligraphic work. We will use a double-pronged approach in our exploration of strength. First, I will give an in-depth demonstration of a pen particularly well suited to strong, bold lines – the Pilot Parallel Pen. We will review its strengths (there are many) and weaknesses (there are few), and how it can best be integrated into a calligrapher’s workflow.
We will start with various exercises to demonstrate the capabilities of the pen, playing with colour mixing and textured surfaces. We will exercise our “muscle memory” through a series of exercises which culminates in a design you create with your “weakest” stroke.
Secondly, we will discuss strength in design. Using principles of design, we will explore ways to make calligraphy strong and effective, making its presence felt in today’s competitive visual environment.

Saturday & Sunday March 17 and 18, 2012 / 9 a.m.– 4 p.m.
Level:  All ..
$120.00  members / $140.00 non-members.

Registration for the two classes below starts on March 5, 2012 for members
and March 12, 2012 for non members

Lorraine Douglas - "Pencil Caps"  (click HERE for PDF registration form)
This workshop is a very playful introduction to the world of drawn capitals made with all kinds of pencils. First we will acquaint ourselves with the basic proportions of capitals. Then we will experiment with an array of pencils and a number of special effects to create a journal.

We will learn pressure/release techniques and how to create letters which are stretched, hung between lines, compressed and just a tad wonky. They can dance and bounce (a little) and have some weight added to them - but only in the right places!

Our goal will be a final project with a Haiku and imagery. No experience necessary - especially as pencil lettering is very forgiving and allows for imperfections. But if you have experience - this is a great workshop to create new variations and take some liberties with your drawn letters.

Saturday & Sunday, April 21 and 22, 2012 -  9 a.m.– 4 p.m.
Level:  All ..
$120.00  members / $140.00 non-members.
